Children’s Bee Craft Workshops in Mwanza, Tanzania

Creative Experiences at Mama Hive, Mwanza

At Mama Hive, we have been enjoying our Bee Craft Workshops where children are invited to come and explore the world of honey and beeswax and create their own beeswax products!

Hands-On Candle Rolling Workshops

One of the latest new activities at Mama Hive has been our beeswax candle rolling workshop. Using locally sourced, natural beeswax which we have moulded into pliable honeycomb-style sheets.

Children are guided step-by-step to create their own candles.

The process is simple, tactile, and deeply satisfying—rolling, shaping, and watching something take form in their hands!

And at the end, each child leaves proudly with something they created themselves.

Other Bee Craft Workshops We Have Held Recently

Other recent activities have included children making their own Nyuki Stix; dipping yarn into beeswax and then imaginatively using their colour sticks to create pictures and models in open-ended play.

Older children have made their own lip balms, blending beeswax with various oils. And for Easter, we have partnered with the Mwanza Yacht Club to invite children to make their own Easter Eggshell Candles. There is endless fun to be had with beeswax!

A Space Designed for Curiosity and Play

All of our workshops are thoughtfully created for children to have fun making and creating with one another, to engage with natural materials and learn interactively about where honey and beeswax comes from.

Did you know that a bee can pollinate up to 5000 flowers in a day? And that a worker bee will make 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in their lifetime? There are so many fun facts about bees!

We want to be able to welcome children to a place in the community that is welcoming and safe, where learning is fun!

Mama Hive in Community

Our work is led by women, by mothers affected by albinism, who are building sustainable livelihoods, supporting one another, and challenging stigma through their skills and creativity.

We want to invite you to join us in our journey, to spread the buzz and step into our space where we can support one another, enjoy being in community, and enjoy sharing our creative talents together! We love meeting people at Mama Hive (located within the AICT Headquarters compound on Makongoro Road). Karibuni!
