Our Story

“Upendo wa Mama” (Mother's Love)

Mama Hive is a honey and beeswax social enterprise born from the loving hearts of mothers affected by albinism to provide for our children, support one another and challenge the stigma that is attached to marginalized people. Our goal is to craft quality beeswax products that work, and see lives transformed as women are trained in artisan skills and empowered by faith and love.

Our Products

Supporting Women and Children with Albinism

Mama Hive seeks to love, support and empower women who have been marginalised because of albinism or other disabilities. Albinism is a genetic skin condition and in Tanzania its association with witchcraft practices has led to people with albinism (and their mothers) facing abuse, stigma and attack. We want to challenge this mindset and celebrate the value of every life, believing everyone is created with love and given unique gifts and purpose.

Quality That Works

Mama Hive products are hand-crafted with love and care. The women make a range of beeswax products from hand-dipped candles and stamped batiks to natural beeswax balms and Kitenge BeesWraps. Women are trained to craft unique quality products that work well for our customers and care for the environment. Our workshop is a hive of activity and place of community, strength and support.

Pure, Natural Ingredients

Mama Hive products are made with pure, natural ingredients. We work with local beekeepers to source naturally harvested pure beeswax and honey. Our balms are chemical-free, using natural oils such as neem, coconut and shea butter, with naturally restorative properties. Our Kitenge BeesWraps are sustainably made to help us all be more environmentally friendly at home

From Hive to Home

We connect with local beekeeping groups in the Mwanza region, supporting grassroot projects which are empowering rural communities. By supporting disadvantaged women who are trained in sustainable beekeeping practices, together we ensure quality honey and beeswax goes from their hives to your home. The honey from each regional group is unique and every jar of honey is building a brighter future.

What we do

We train and employ marginalised women in the making of beeswax products to generate income.

We support rural communities of women beekeepers training in sustainable beekeeping practices with our partner, Bees Abroad. We provide an accessible market for them to sell their honey and beeswax at a fair price.

We support and mentor vulnerable women, offering opportunities for building skills and self-confidence.

Our goal is to empower women through a self-sustaining business, advocate for social balance for those in vulnerable situations and inspire creative and innovative initiatives.
